Day 1

<p>Your guide will meet you at the airport and bring you out to where the tour vehicle is waiting. Drive through the lunar landscapes of Reykjanes Peninsula as you head to Reykjavík. Your tour representative will give you a quick briefing to the tour as you travel to your hotel.</p>
<p><em>Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price. Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).</em></p>
<p>Dinner is on your own tonight. Reykjavík’s tempting variety of restaurants and cuisines will make your dining experience a delight. (We can also add in dinner on this night for your group, if requested).</p>

Day 2

<p><strong>National Park with Geological Wonders – The Golden Falls – Lively Geysers</strong></p>
<p>Breakfast at your hotel. Meet your guide and driver and start your adventure!</p>
<p>This leisurely first day begins with a visit to <strong>Þingvellir National Park,</strong> the ancient site of the world&#8217;s oldest continuous Parliament and a jewel of Icelandic nature. Next, your group will travel to the nearby <strong>Geysir</strong> geothermal area and witness boiling pools and hot springs. The most active geyser, Strokkur, shoots water high into the air every few minutes. Then you’ll head onwards to the beautiful <strong>Gullfoss</strong> “Golden waterfall,” considered by many Icelanders to be the most impressive falls in Iceland.</p>

Day 3

<p><strong>Thundering Waterfalls –Seabird Colony – Black Sand Beaches</strong></p>
<div>Breakfast at your hotel. Drive through the <strong>South Shore</strong> region, a scenic area impacted by volcanoes and glaciers. Admire two photogenic waterfalls: ribbon-like <strong>Seljalandsfoss</strong> with its foot path leading behind the cascade, and <strong>Skógafoss</strong> with Mýrdalsjökull glacier towering above it.</div>

<div>Head to a black sand beach to enjoy great views from the <strong>Dyrhólaey</strong>* headland, where thousands of seabirds nest during the summer. You might even spot puffins (generally in Iceland between mid-May and mid-August). Take a lunch stop in the area of Vík village before crossing the Mýrdalssandur outwash plains created by the notorious Katla volcano.</div>

<div>After passing through the vast <strong>Eldhraun</strong> lava field, the largest lava flow on earth since the end of the Ice Age, you’ll reach Kirkjubæjarklaustur, a town named for a Medieval convent.</div>

Iceland’s South Shore

Day 4

<p><strong>Glacial Lagoon with Icebergs – Europe&#8217;s Largest National Park – Europe&#8217;s Largest Glacier</strong></p>
<p>Breakfast at your hotel. Today you’ll be in the largest national park in western Europe, <strong>Vatnajökull National Park</strong>. Your day starts with a drive through impressive scenery towards Vatnajökull, the largest glacier in Europe. Visit the park’s <strong>Skaftafell</strong> area, a beautiful green oasis surrounded by glaciers and volcanic features. Circumnavigate around the <strong>Öræfajökul</strong>l volcano and Iceland’s highest peak, <strong>Hvannadalshnjúkur</strong>, enjoying the vast views.</p>
<p>You’ll also visit <strong>Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon</strong>, where huge icebergs dance around in icy seawater. Nearby is the <strong>Diamond Beach,</strong> famous from social media posts of its crystalline icebergs resting on the black sands.</p>
<p>Return to Kirkjubæjarklaustur area for dinner and overnight.</p>

Vatnajökull National Park and Jökulsárlón  

Day 5

<p><strong>Multicoloured Mountains of the Interior – Lava Fields – Hot Springs River – Hekla Volcano</strong></p>
<div>Breakfast at your hotel. Today it’s time for your group to turn inwards towards Iceland’s wilderness: the highlands! <em>Note: Some of the roads will be bumpy since you’re driving on unpaved wilderness tracks, but it’s all part of the adventure! The views will be amazing!</em></div>

<div>Meander along the <strong>Fjallabaksleið</strong> mountain road track to<strong> Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve</strong>, a spectacular area surrounded by colourful rhyolite mountains. Geothermal activity flourishes here, and you will have the opportunity to soak outside in a naturally heated geothermal river. The surreal beauty of the uninhabited interior reveals deep valleys and sculptured, often mossy, mountains. Many of these mountains were formed by volcanic eruptions under glaciers during the Ice Age.</div>

<div>During your drive, you’ll get views of beautiful <strong>Mt. Hekla</strong>, Iceland’s most frequently erupting volcano. Head to your accommodation on the edge of the highland wilderness.</div>

<p><strong>Historical Wilderness Trail – Black Sand Desert – Mountain Queen</strong></p>

Today discover more hidden treasures of Iceland’s uninhabited interior as you travel along the central Sprengisandur trail. <em>Note: Some of the roads will be bumpy since you’re driving on unpaved wilderness tracks, but it’s all part of the adventure! <div><strong>Sprengisandur</strong> is a vast, barren black desert connecting the north and the south. With only rough tracks and unbridged glacial rivers, you’ll certainly appreciate the excellent skills of your driver to navigate this rugged passage between the glaciers. You’ll also discover how this route holds legends and ghost stories. It is even inspiration for one of the country’s most famous folk songs!  During the day, you might catch a glimpse of the elegant <strong>Mt. Herðubreið</strong>, Iceland’s “Queen of Mountains.”</div>

Sprengisandur Highland Track- North Iceland

Day 7

<h4><strong>Glacial River Gorge – Europe’s Most Powerful Waterfall – Geothermal Activity – Rich Birdlife</strong></h4>

<p>Breakfast at your hotel. Ahead is a fully packed day of wildly varying landscapes! Your trip starts with a route leading through the charming fishing town of<strong> Húsavík </strong>and around the Tjörnes peninsula at the edge of the Arctic Circle.</p>
<p>Visit some of the wonders of northern <strong>Vatnajökull National Park</strong>, an area of dramatic canyons and waterfalls. Explore the lush vegetation growing in the horseshoe-shaped canyon of <strong>Ásbyrg</strong>i. Vikings believed it was a hoof-print left by Sleipnir, Óðinn’s eight-legged flying horse from Norse mythology.  Your journey continues to <strong>Dettifoss</strong>, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, which is located in the awe-inspiring <strong>Jökulsárgljúfur</strong> canyon.</p>
<p>Next, you’ll discover the unforgettable <strong>Lake Mývatn area</strong>, a geological wonderland and paradise for bird watchers. One of the most visually bizarre attractions in the region is the colourful geothermal area of <strong>Námaskarð</strong>. View the still-warm lava fields near <strong>Krafla</strong> volcano, teeming with lava flows, fissures, and explosion craters. Your last stop of this spectacular day will be at the peculiar lava formations of <strong>Dimmuborgir,</strong> the “Dark Citadels.”</p>

Northern Vatnajökull National Park and Lake Mývatn

Day 8

<p><strong>Waterfall of the Gods – The Capital of the North – Viking Horses</strong></p>
<div>Breakfast at your hotel. Visit historical <strong>Goðafoss</strong>, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the country, before continuing to <strong>Akureyri</strong>, the vibrant “Capital of the North.” Enjoy some free time in Iceland’s second largest community. Some of your activities might include visiting the delightful botanical garden or enjoying the art and fine food of the Listagil artists’ district.</div>

<div>Later today, your route continues to the <strong>Skagafjörðu</strong>r district, known as the traditional heart of horse breeding in Iceland. You’ll probably see horses of different colours grazing in the fields. If your group is interested, we can add in the possibility of a farm visit with a demonstration about Icelandic horses and their unique gait. Skagafjörður also holds many historical sites from the classic Viking-age Sagas.</div>

Akureyri and Skagafjörður

Day 9

<p><strong>Fertile Farmlands – Birthplace of Leif Eiríksson – Quaint Fishing Villages</strong></p>
<p>After breakfast, your journey continues through rolling farmlands and across Laxárdalsheiði heath to the Viking Age house at <strong>Eiríksstaðir</strong>. This was the original home of Erik the Red and the birthplace of his son, Leifur Eiríksson, who discovered North America. In a replica of a grass-roofed longhouse, you will meet modern day Vikings who will demonstrate daily life from 1000 years ago, sharing their crafts and knowledge.</p>
<p>Afterwards, travel through small seaside towns on the northern coast of the <strong>Snæfellsnes peninsula</strong><strong>.</strong></p>

The West and Iceland’s Viking Heritage 

Day 10

<p><strong>Snæfellsjökull Glacier – Pebble Beaches – Sea Cliffs with Birdlife</strong></p>
<p>Breakfast at your hotel. Today you’ll explore the amazing variety of natural landscapes in <strong>Snæfellsjökull National Park</strong>, which covers much of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The crowning jewel is Snæfellsjökull glacier itself, which covers a dormant volcano that last erupted in 250 AD.</p>
<p>Visit <strong>Kirkjufell,</strong> the most photographed mountain in Iceland. You might recognise it as the Arrow Mountain in the <em>Game of Thrones</em> series. Walk along the uniquely pebbled seascape of <strong>Djúpalónssandur </strong>beach, where perhaps you’ll try the traditional fishermen’s test. At the picturesque harbour village of <strong>Arnarstapi</strong>, you’ll observe magnificent basalt rocks in stacked formations and take a walk along the interesting hiking trail linking the settlements of Arnarstapi and Hellnar.</p>
<p>After a day of discoveries, drive back to Reykjavík. Your guide will bid your group farewell at the hotel. The rest of the day is open for your own activities. Dinner is on your own.</p>

Snæfellsjökull National Park

Day 11

<p>Breakfast at your hotel. <em>(Please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight). </em>Depending on your schedule there may be free time to explore Reykjavik, take a refreshing morning walk, and do some shopping.</p>
<p>Meet your bus driver at your hotel for an unguided transfer to Keflavík Airport and your return flight. You’ll have the chance to take in some final views of Iceland as you drive along the Reykjanes Peninsula to the airport. Enjoy your trip back to your home country and the fond memories of your time in Iceland!</p>
