Discover the splendid beauty and historic landmarks of the Westman Islands, situated just off the south coast of Iceland. Though the flight is just twenty minutes from Reykjavik, the landscape and atmosphere feels like a totally different world.   Although the islands are best known for being the home to the largest puffin colonies in the world and the 1973 volcanic eruption which led to the evacuation of the island, it is the local culture and resilience of the people that will leave the best impressions.

While you are in the Westman Islands you can visit the award-winning museum Eldheimar which will show you with great visual effects how the 1973 volcanic eruption affected the local community. You can also stop by Saeheimar Aquarium and Natural History museum, where the real puffins Hafdis and Thor welcome all visitors.

It’s easy to explore Westman Island from sea, with numerous boat tours on offer. You can see bird species such as guillemots, gannets, kittiwakes, razorbills and puffins as well as the many islands in this archipelago.
