Day 1

An Iceland Travel guide will meet you at the airport and bring you out to where the tour vehicle is waiting. Head to Reykjavík. Your guide will give you an introduction to your tour as you travel to your hotel.
Please note guaranteed early check-in is not included in the price. Most hotels begin check-in around 14:00 (2:00pm).
Dinner is on your own tonight. Reykjavík’s tempting variety of restaurants and cuisines will make the dining experience a delight. (We can also add dinner on this night for your group, if requested.)
Optional Activity: Visit to Viking World museum in Keflavík en route to your hotel. You can see the Íslendingur Viking longboat replica that sailed from Iceland to North America in 2000. There also is a fascinating exhibit about the Viking exploration of Greenland and North America. We can also arrange for your group to enjoy a delicious morning breakfast buffet or afternoon hearty soup and bread at the museum’s restaurant.

Day 2

Panoramic views – Old Town Reykjavík – The Settlement Exhibition
Enjoy a delicious and healthy Icelandic breakfast at your hotel. Meet your guide and coach driver for a Reykjavík sightseeing tour that visits interesting sites around the world’s northernmost capital city.
Drive to the tip of the peninsula for views of the bay and the Seltjarnarnes lighthouse, then continue to the city’s main landmark, Hallgrímskirkja church, whose high tower is a landmark visible from all over Reykjavík and beyond (admission to the tower is not included, but we can add it to your itinerary quote). Then your group will go on an easy walking tour of the Old Town Reykjavík centre. Walk by the Icelandic Parliament building which houses the world&#8217;s oldest ongoing legislative assembly. Close by is the City Hall, the Lutheran and Catholic cathedrals, as well as the bustling Old Harbour.
You’ll also get an insight  into Reykjavík’s Viking age history at the Settlement Exhibition. The interactive museum was built around the oldest ruins of human habitation in Reykjavík: a 10th century longhouse hall. You can walk around the excavated hall and learn how the occupants used each room. You’ll also learn about Viking daily life and how the Reykjavík area looked when people first settled it.
After the tour, we’ve left open time for you to explore Reykjavík on your own. (Transfer back to the hotel is not included.) One of our favourite historical places is the National Museum, which has interesting exhibits on Iceland’s history from the Settlement until the 21st century. Dinner is on your own.

Reykjavík City Sightseeing & Old Town Walk

Day 3

Nobel Prize Author – World’s Oldest Parliament – Viking Settlers
Breakfast at your hotel. Today, your group will head into the countryside to discover Iceland’s fascinating history and folklore.
The first stop is Gljúfrasteinn, the home and workplace of Halldór Laxness (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955). It is now a museum and unchanged from when Laxness lived there. Head onwards to Þingvellir National Park, foundation site of the world’s oldest parliament. Þingvellir is the heart of Icelandic culture, and a beloved place for Icelanders. You’ll discover why as you walk through this beautiful historic site and learn about important events that happened here.
Þingvellir is also geologically fascinating: you can see the meeting point of the European and North American tectonic plates. You’ll be walking through two continents, as well as through history!
Cross the Kaldidalur wilderness mountain pass and stop at the picturesque Hraunfossar and Barnafoss waterfalls. You’ll also hear about the poignant legend that gave its name to Barnafoss. Enjoy the views of glacial blue water streaming through rugged lava formations before heading to Reykholt, home of Snorri Sturluson, the eminent 13th century chieftain and Saga author. Snorri was an interesting person who was a big player in the chaotic civil war that took place during this time.
Drive to Borg Farm, birthplace of Egill Skallagrímsson, Iceland’s most (in)famous Viking poet. The town of Borgarnes is named after Egill’s farmstead, and it now is the site of a fascinating interactive museum about the Viking settlement of Iceland in the 9th century.

Day 4

Home of Leif Eiríksson – Elf Folklore – The Laxdæla Saga
Breakfast at your hotel. Today, your group will drive through Western Iceland, a region rich with Viking history. This area was the setting for Laxdæla Saga, a Viking-age tale of adventure and romance.
The road leads first to the historic area of Búðardalur. Visit Eiríksstaðir, the original home of Erik the Red, first settler of Greenland. It is also the birthplace of his son Leif Eiríksson, who sailed all the way to North America. At this living history museum and archaeological site, you’ll experience the places, daily life, and activities described in Icelandic Sagas. A short drive down the road brings you to Leifsbúð Museum and the Leif Eiríksson Vinland Exhibit, with tools and artifacts from the Viking Age. In addition to Viking history, the area holds fascinating stories of elves, ghosts, and sorcerers. The &#8220;Elf Colony&#8221; in the rock at Tungustapi is the setting for one of Iceland’s most-loved folktales.
Drive through Laxárdalsheiði heath and into North Iceland. Visit Vatnsnes peninsula, where you’ll view the extraordinary Hvítserkur rock formation and, hopefully, some seals sunning themselves. The final stop of the day is at the unique little Þingeyri stone church, the former site of Iceland’s first monastery, established in the early 12th century.

Day 5

Historical Farm and church – Legendary Battle – Herring Heritage
Breakfast at your hotel. Today you’ll explore beautiful Skagafjörður, one of Iceland’s best areas for historical happenings.
Visit the turf-roofed manor house, Glaumbær, at the Skagafjörður Regional Museum. People lived here from the 18th century until 1947. Icelandic turf homes were built using a technique unchanged since Viking times. It’s a fascinating experience to walk through the turf house and see how people lived. Glaumbær was the inspiration for Hannah Kent’s best-selling historical novel Burial Rites.
Then your group heads onwards to the village of Sauðárkrokur and the 1238 Battle of Iceland experience. This exhibit uses virtual reality technology that brings to life the pivotal 13th century Örlygsstaðir battle (fought in Skagafjörður) that changed Iceland’s history forever.
Stop in Hólar, an important historical site in Iceland that holds buildings from nine centuries of history. Your group will visit the beautiful 18th century church here. Drive along the coast, enjoying an excellent view of majestic Drangey Island, soaring 150 meters (500 feet) out of the ocean. This is where the famous 10th century Icelandic outlaw, Grettir the Strong, met his destiny.
Afterwards, head on to Siglufjörður, a beautiful town nestled between steep mountains and an open fjord. Siglufjörður was the capital of the herring industry in its heyday during the bountiful “herring gold rush” (1905 – 1965). Visit the award-winning Herring-Era Maritime Museum where this period comes to life.

Historical Skagafjörður

Day 6

Desert Highlands – Golden Falls – Lively Geysers
Note: Today you will be driving on an amazing mountain track with slow and bumpy travel. It’s part of the experience and adventure of  Iceland!
Breakfast at your hotel. Today, your group will get a taste of the hidden beauty and adventure of Iceland’s interior wilderness. Travel along the highland track Kjölur, a legendary Arctic desert route mentioned in the Sagas. Viking settlers in North Iceland used this trail to attend the annual meeting at Þingvellir, and their descendants used Kjölur as a main route for transporting important food and supplies with packhorse caravans. The trail holds many thrilling ghost stories and folk tales, thanks to its isolated and surreal landscape.
The mountain track travels between two huge glaciers: Langjökull and Hofsjökull. Stop at the Hveravellir geothermal area and take a short walk to the natural warm pool and hot springs with colourful silica deposits. Hveravellir is a famous outlaw refuge from ancient times, where ghosts take the form of shadows moving across the desert.
You’ll emerge back in civilisation at Gullfoss “the Golden falls,” considered by many Icelanders to be Iceland’s finest waterfall. Close by is the Geysir area with boiling mud craters and erupting hot springs, including Strokkur. Visit Skálholt, an important historic, cultural, and political centre until the year 1785. It was actually Iceland’s first “capital” before Reykjavík took the title. In addition to the bishop&#8217;s office, Skálholt was the location of a wooden cathedral, school, smithy, and monastery. A beautiful modern church stands here, and the area still hosts cultural events.

Day 7

Njáll’s Saga – Modern Saga Tapestry – Black Sand Beaches
Breakfast at your hotel. Today you’ll be visiting the landscape of Burnt Njáll’s Saga, one of Iceland’s most important literary medieval works. Drive through an area of rich farmlands and majestic mountains. On a clear day, you might see two famous volcanoes: Mt. Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull.
Visit the Njáll’s Saga Tapestry &amp; Saga Centre in Hvollsvöllur village. You’ll learn more about the saga and view a colourful tapestry that area locals created that depicts events from Njáll’s Saga. The tapestry was made in the same style as the famous Bayeux tapestry.
You’ll then follow along Road 1 to the thundering waterfalls of Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Make sure to have your camera ready to catch an image of these beautiful waterfalls. Skógafoss also hides a secret from the Middle Ages.
Continue to the troll-like Reynisdrangar rock formations and the pretty village of Vík, surrounded by beautiful and impressive high bird cliffs and unique black sand beaches. There is something both enchanting and humbling about standing on the beach and hearing the thundering waves.
Drive back to Reykjavík in the afternoon, where your guide bids you farewell at your hotel.
Overnight stay in Reykjavík. Dinner is on your own.

Iceland’s South Shore

Day 8

Breakfast at your hotel. (Please note that this might be a light breakfast if you are taking an early morning departure flight). Depending on your schedule there may be free time to explore Reykjavik, take a refreshing morning walk and do some shopping.
Meet your bus driver at your hotel for an unguided transfer to Keflavík Airport and your return flight. You’ll have the chance to take in some final views of Iceland as you drive along the Reykjanes Peninsula to the airport. Enjoy your trip back to your home country and the fond memories of your time in Iceland!
