Our Guide to Iceland as a Top Luxury Destination

Iceland is one of the last places in the world where you can get completely lost (in the best possible way, of course) and reunite with nature. Some of the best places Iceland has to offer are only reachable by modified trucks, horses, boats or many days of hiking. However, utilizing the luxurious travel option of helicopters and the expertise of our local experts, those places can be visited even on day trips out from the capital

Picture yourself soaring across glistening glaciers or robust volcanoes on a private helicopter, feeling the gust behind you as you power on a snowmobile, trekking with knowledgeable private guides in idyllic remote highlands, decompressing in a secluded hot spring or enjoying a 5-star meal in places whose names you’ll never be able to pronounce. The world is your oyster and today Iceland is on the menu.

If you are looking for a lavish trip of a lifetime. These are our top recommendations and ideas for your Iceland travel. And remember, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Nine Worlds luxury travel experts should you need further inspiration!

Painted mountains of Landmannalaugar

Luxury camping (glamping) along Laugavegur Trail

Luxury camping might seem like an oxymoron; however, “glamping” as it’s become known is a global phenomenon and for good reason! Our suggested glamping experience will take you to Iceland’s famous painted mountains of Landmannalauguar in Iceland’s highlands where your guide will make sure you get to see all of the wonders of the area, such as Ljotipollur crater, Graenegil canyon, and Hekla–one of Iceland’s most active volcanos.

Landmannalaugar

For those especially interested in the hikes, the highlight of your trip will likely be the peak of Blahnjukur whose views are especially rewarding. The natural geothermally warmed waters of the local pools and showers facilitate perfect relaxation at the end of the day.

Private bathing in the Blue Lagoon from the suites at The Retreat

Indulge yourself in luxurious warm geothermal waters

Retreat at the Blue Lagoon

If you thought the Blue lagoon was extravagant, think again. The Retreat at the Blue Lagoon is an unparalleled destination. Located on the Reykjanes peninsula only 45 minutes driving from Reykjavík, this place is something else. When you first lay eyes on the stark turquoise water meeting the pitch black lava field that somehow softens through the green moss you get the feeling that this can’t be real. But trust me when I say, this is simply Mother Nature at her best.

Yoga and relaxation at The Retreat

The Retreat is truly an architectural dream, offering heavenly cuisine at its beautiful Moss restaurant, and a legion of relaxation, message and spa opportunities for guests. The rooms are then yet another surprise. The balance between Nordic design and a connection with the surrounding roughness of nature meets in perfect harmony. Every single detail is artfully articulated to fit your every need and the visuals both inside and out irresistible. This is a place to gather your thoughts and indulge in some serious self-care.

Bathing at Vök Baths

Vök Baths

In the East of Iceland, in the region known for its deep and majestic fjords, charming small fishing villages and flocks of wild reindeer, you will find the otherworldly Vök baths. In this location, natural hot water runs into special pools in the middle of the ice-cold Urriðavatn lake. Creating the most stellar contrast and a truly unique bathing experience.

This is one of the newest luxury bathing experiences in Iceland. Built in harmony with its natural surroundings, the emphasis is on sustainability and respect for nature. This synchronization with nature is also evident in in the local ingredients used at their lovely restaurant which offers a splendor of dishes to enjoy pre- or post- your rejuvenation soak. My favorite thing about the restaurant is the tea bar, where you can brew your own from Icelandic herbs and 75°c (167 F) hot water directly from the ground!

Our favorite high-end dining experiences

Sumac

Lebanese and Morrocan in Iceland? Somehow this mixture whilst using local quality ingredients makes for the most delicious combination. Their beautiful interior and an open kitchen create a wonderful experience. However, for those looking to sit more privately, Sumac also invites their guests to enjoy the back room with a private bar and tailored-catering. This place is one you will remember and perfect for vegan/vegetarians!

Slippurinn in Westman Islands

Now this is a culinary experience!

This family-run gem in the stunning Westman Islands right off the south coast in Iceland is a must-try. The chefs are focused on local produce. Not only in the way they make use of the daily catch of fish but also in the way they go out to pick berries, get sorrell and island herbs which they magically play within their cooking.

Note: Only open during the summer season.

Norð Austur Sushi Bar at Seyðisfjörður

Named after the most tiring wind direction in Iceland this place is anything but. Using fresh local produce the chefs whip up one mouth-watering plate after the other and some delicately chosen beverages to go with. Being located in Seyðisfjörður, a colorful fishing village in the remote Eastfjords, you cannot help but be surprised with the quality and metropolitan ambiance which is somehow wrapped in their sweet local charm.

Ask for rolls that combine the catch of the day both from the nearby river and the Atlantic sea. They are bound to dazzle your tastebuds!
